Some changes coming. I’ve decided to move my daily photo postings over to “Buy Me A Coffee”

Buy Me A Coffee

I have difficulties with inserting photo with the editor on this substack platform. They sometimes jump to entirely different location. I have to refresh the screen to access the Metadata tag and caption field. Since the posts are photos I’d rather not fight with the tool.

Buy Me a Coffee has a distinct advantage with photos. I can link them to my Portfolio so readers can view them in full resolution if they wish.

Both Substack and Buy Me A Coffee offer creators a way to earn money. However Buy Me A Coffee allows one time contributions. I would rather get a one off donation (a coffee) than tie anyone to a subscription. Both platforms free signup for email delivery but it is a little harder to do that with Buy Me a Coffee.

This is how you do it:

1. Look for the three dots on the upper right corner of the home page.

2. Click on Follow and enter your email address

3. This is free, no charge, buying me a coffee is not necessary

Good Morning

The backup continues. I always wondered about the files that I had lost in a previous disk failure. For the #River theme I was looking for a picture of the Yangtze River that I had taken in 1986. It didn’t exist on my system. Thankfully I found a copy on Flickr that I had uploaded years ago.

Good Morning

Happy August, the recovery of the lost disk is still proceeding 73% complete. For some reason I was a awake at 3 AM. It this the new reality as a I approach a milestone birthday?

I’m still tinkering with my “new” online publications. Adding photos to the Portfolio, posting to the blog and dusting off some of the older elements in my original wordpress site.

Good Morning

Back to the regular routine of puzzles, Tai Chi and the social activities around town. Carbonite is restoring the files lost when my disk crashed. Still proceeding 69% complete, Ordered a NAS storage system to make my system a little more resilient.

I spent way too much time yesterday tweaking old blogs and my free version of Wordpress. I’m trying to move away from paying monthly fees for hosting and licensing. The one exception is my decision to pay for an online photography portfolio. I encourage my readers to take a look and leave me a comment or suggestion.

Good Morning

Back to the regular routine of puzzles, Tai Chi and the social activities around town. A replacement hard drive is on order for my desktop so we’ll see if I can recover from that. I spent way too much time yesterday learning how to use SmugMug as an online portfolio for my photos. Time that would have been better spent cleaning this room or pulling weeds. The Portfolio is a work in progress.

Was Lee Harvey Oswald controlled by a remote control?

In 1968 I was a studying electronics at Norwalk Technical College in Norwalk, CT. The class attended an Electronics Trade Show in Boston. That is where I encountered this protester. I didn’t have time to read the entire screed on the billboard and my analog camera didn’t have the resolution to allow me to read it now but I remember the gist of the complaint.

Apparently Lee Harvey Oswald had an electronic device implanted in his brain which was used to control him in his assassination of President Kennedy. I assume this was done at the bequest of the CIA or the Cubans. It might have happened. Makes me go “Hmmmm”.

Good Evening

“Good God, Cape Cod” - We return from the Cape. Nice stay but pricey of course. I ordered a replacement hard drive for my broken desktop. I also noticed that Adobe Creative Cloud has upped their subscription from $10 a month to $15 starting July 1st. I suppose this has to be due to getting those pixels through the straits of Hormuz. Or maybe it is a tariff charge. Whatever the reason, it is a kick in my pants to wean myself away from using rented software. More about that in future postings.

However I did decide to spend some monthly money to create an online portfolio of photographs on Smugmug. I’ve been doing this with flickr but this platform (which owns flickr) is a bit more polished. I only have a few photos posted but it will grow over time. Give it a look.

Good Morning

“Good God, Cape Cod” - A Cape escape for a few days but not without a bit of drama. Just before we left for the Cape I was working on some photos on my computer. I kept hearing a chirping sound. I wondered if it was fire detector alarm or one of the myriad electronic devices we all have. Unfortunately it was the sound of my computer hard drive dying. A disk loaded with decades of photos. I pay for Carbonite as a backup service but I am baffled about how complicated it will be to rebuild a system with all the applications and settings.

Needless to say this puts a serious crimp in my ability to publish not only this substack but the one I do for the New Ipswich Historical Society.

Good Morning

Another winning morning. Cool and dry. I’m only one away from a milestone in WAFFLE. My left hand feels pretty good this morning. The trigger finger has been keeping me from playing the guitar, not sure if I want to risk trying it, the “D” chord trips me up each time. Perhaps the cortisone injection is working.

Good Morning

Cloudy day, the smoke is supposed to make a comeback. Yesterday I received a cortisone injection in my left hand to fix a trigger finger problem. I was hoping it would okay for today so I could attend an acoustic jam but it is still an issue. It’s kind of a bummer that I can’t chord a “D” chord, or even a decent “A”. It might take a week or more to have it fully recover. Meanwhile I intend to put some time in trying to learn clawhammer style banjo which thankfully means thinking only about what the right hand is doing. My doctor diagnosed me as having O.L.D. which I found rather amusing.

Water Treatment

My well water needs to be treated. Originally I had a automatic system that would back flush it on a schedule. It used motor driven cams with pins and micro-switches that would open valves. It required a lot of salt to “soften” the water. I’ve upgraded to an “on demand” system which was expensive but uses much less salt. The automatic system is an engineering marvel.
