The Amazing Flower Farm Rabbit (Free at Last)

Amazing Flower Farm

The Amazing Flower Farm Nursery has opened for the season. It is located at 202 Poor Farm Road in New Ipswich. Owner Ara Lynn had trapped a rabbit which was hanging around her back door and was unafraid of being approached. She was trying to determine if it was a Eastern Cottontail or the endangered New England Cottontail.

After speaking with experts, she was convinced it was the more common Eastern. They have been migrating further North. The New England Cottontails are only found near the coast. Because the animals behaviour was so unusual, there was a question about whether it was healthy. Luckily an animal rehabber checked it out and it was just fine, just unafraid.

I was unable to share a video but they let the rabbit go near the house and it didn’t run away. Apparently that is where it wants to live. Ara is okay with that as long as it restricts its diet to grass and clover instead of nursery stock. Ara can share the video with you when you visit.

Amazing Flower Farm Open

Amazing Flower Farm

The Amazing Flower Farm Nursery has opened for the season. It is located at 202 Poor Farm Road in New Ipswich. I visited on Saturday to buy a Cuphea plant to feed the hummingbirds who should be arriving in a couple of days. While I was visiting I noticed this:

It is a rabbit, not a flower. Ara explained that it was no skittish and was hanging around the house so they decided to trap it. She does not think it is the common Eastern cottontail and may be an endangered species. If you know, leave a comment.

My suggestion for a name would be “Harvey”. If you don’t get the reference, look it up.

While I was chatting with Ara, I noticed that a hornet had decided to land in her hair. Thankfully she did reach up to get it.

A coworker coaxed the hornet out by providing an alternative landing spot

Cuphea “Honeybells”

The reason I was anxious to purchase the cuphea was that I prefer to attract the hummingbirds with flowers rather than sugar water which quickly spoils. No ants, no cleaning. This plant thrives in full sun. It is still too cold to leave out but I will put it up in a hanging basket. Here is a photo from August 2023.

These obnoxious creatures attack you from above before landing and taking a huge bite of flesh. Solution is a double-sided clue strip. One side has a mild glue layer that affixes to a hat, the other is a industrial strength flypaper. They are defeated by their own behavior of soft landings.

On this date 21 years ago I spotted my first black bear in the wild. We had already lived here for 29 years but they weren’t really an issue. Now I have to be careful to just use safflower seed which they don’t seem to care about. No black oil or suet till winter.

After I finished having a heart scan at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, I stopped to grab a coffee (after abstaining for 24 hours). Completely unexpected I ran into my friend who had just finished a different scan. My tracer had a short half life but she was still radiating. I’m so glad that I brought my geiger counter.

Here’s to living in the atomic age.
